Christmas Reflections – December, 4

“Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible.”Luke 1:34-37 NKJV

This is a miracle: a virgin will conceive and give birth to a child! Mary asked the angel Gabriel (who delivered this news to her) how this would happen, to which he answered that God would supernaturally, through His Holy Spirit, place the seed inside her womb. This means that God is Jesus’ Father, which reveals the deity of Jesus. He is God in the flesh.

Jesus was born perfect and sinless. He was not a descendant of Adam, but Scripture calls Him the second Adam (Romans 5:12-21). Jesus (God in the flesh) was able to break the power of sin because He was born without a sinful nature, unlike everyone after Adam. Jesus came to deal with the sin problem (Matthew 1:21; John 1:29; 1 John 2:2) so that we could be restored into right relationship with God. When we receive Jesus and are born-again (born of God – John 3:7; 1 John 5:1) our sinful nature dies (Romans 6:6) and we receive a new righteous nature (2 Corinthians 5:21). We exchange the lineage and heritage of Adam for that of Jesus Christ. We are new creations with a new bloodline, new heritage and new inheritance (2 Corinthians 5:17).
