Christmas Reflections – December, 3

“Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
Luke 1:30-33 NKJV

We never have to fear or be scared of God – He is for us, not against us (Romans 8:31). God is a loving Father who wants the best for us. He isn’t out to take advantage of us or cause negative things to happen to us. Mary had no reason to fear because God favoured her – not because of her behaviour but by grace! Likewise, we have God’s favour by grace – we don’t deserve it, but He extends undeserved favour towards us because He loves us.

Mary was chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus. That doesn’t make her more holy than or superior to Jesus – she was simply the vessel that was chosen to deliver God’s gift to the world. Even Mary recognized that she needed a Saviour (Luke 1:47), just like everyone else in the world.

God loved us so much that He gave Jesus as a gift for us (John 3:16), to save us from our sin and from perishing, and to give us the gift of eternal life.
