Many Christians aren’t flourishing in their life because they don’t know what happened to them when they got born again, or they don’t believe the truth of what the Word says about what happened to them when they got born again. As believers, we have so much in Christ and yet we still tend to see ourselves as deficient; as though we’ve got nothing and are nothing! We tend to wrongly see the Christian life as a journey of trying to become and trying to impress God to get blessed by God – it’s a deficiency mentality and not a biblical mentality.
When you wake up to the reality of who you are in Christ and who God really is (that he’s not withholding anything good from you) it’s going to push all your buttons! The Christian life is impossible but the empowering of the Holy Spirit makes the impossible possible. Christianity is not an opportunity to give life another shot and try harder to do better. That’s not what Christianity is about. Christianity is a whole new life.
2 Corinthians 5:17 New King James Version (NKJV)
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
The Christian life is not a continuation of your previous life it is is a completely new life. Your genealogy is now of God. Your family bloodline is Christ. I know that I am opening up a can of worms here for some of you, but I grew up believing in generational curses and we would break these things all the time trying to get into a place of blessing so that we would flourish. We’d be looking for reasons as to why we are not flourishing. We would blame the devil, blame generational curses and blame everything other than our decisions or our lack of understanding or knowledge. The bible says that we perish because of a lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6). We don’t perish because of generational curses. We don’t perish because the devil is so big and so strong or because he’s out to get us. We perish because we don’t know something and what we don’t know will kill us. People love to blame shift. It’s what happened all the way back in the Garden of Eden. “It’s that woman you gave me…” “It was the serpent…” People don’t want to accept responsibility for their actions or inaction. Jesus said that we have whatever we say (Mark 11:23) and Proverbs tells us that the power of life and death is in the tongue (Proverbs 18:21). We are hung by our own tongues. We need to start taking more responsibility for what we say; for the words that we speak and the decisions that we make. God gives us the choice between life and death, blessings and curses (Deuteronomy 30:19). Our decisions determine the life that we live in. Yes, things come against us. Yes, the enemy is a factor, but we’ve got authority over the devil!
Luke 10:18-19 New King James Version (NKJV)
And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
As Christians, we shouldn’t be scared of the devil. When he does come to steal, to kill and to destroy we should be all over him and win, every time. We’ve got a God-given authority to make him run when we show up. We just need to realize what we have in Christ. We’ve got the authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy. He might come against us but we’re bigger than him. When we’re submitted to God we can resist the devil and see the devil flee (Jame 4:7). We kind of love to blame-shift to things like generational curses but if we’re in Christ the new has come and the old is gone – we are completely new (2 Corinthians 5:17). The moment you step into a union with Christ is the moment you step out of all association with any generational curses. You’re no longer are under the condemnation of what your parents, grandparents or great grandparents did. Your genealogy is now of God. “If any man be in Christ, he’s a new creature.” You are now a new creature.
1 John 5:1 New King James Version (NKJV)
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God…
If you believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, then you are born of God! You’ve got a new genealogy. You are now born of God and overcome the world! You can’t blame generational curses for the problems in your life. You cannot blame generation curses for your lack of flourishing, your lack of success or your lack of prosperity in your life. The moment you receive Christ is the moment you are completely dead to any generational curses and any effect they could have on your life. You are now completely alive to the blessing of God!
I believe that generational curse teaching is really just anti-Christ because it glorifies sin (which Jesus dealt with on the cross) and it takes the focus off of Jesus and puts it onto sin (something that Jesus dealt with on the cross). It makes people become sin-conscious and involves self-effort to be free from sin – when we are free from sin because of grace! Faith in Jesus and what He did for you on the cross is more than enough for you to walk in freedom. You cannot have a revelation of the new birth and the new creation and still believe that you have to experience problems in your life because of the sins of your fathers and for their fathers and for their fathers, fathers. If you want to flourish in your life, you need to see yourself as a new creation. You need to see yourself as God sees you in order to flourish in life. You need to see yourself as free from the old man sinful man, and you need to see yourself as a new creation.
If you’d like some more teaching on generational curses I encourage you to check out an article I have on the topic. It’s available on my website.
If you believe that there are troubles in your life because of generational curses, and you can see evidence of it, then all you need to do is be born again. The answer to breaking free from generational curses is to be born again. But if you are born again and you’re still seeing the effects of generational curses in your life, then you need to accept the truth about what happened to you when you got born again. You need to start awakening to the truth of who you are in Christ. And as you do that, it will liberate you and you will start to walk in freedom.
